StarCraft japanese game box

  • The original StarCraft was released in 1998. In 1999, the game was localized into Japanese and released in Japan.
  • The localization into Japanese was handled by SourceNext under license from Blizzard. However, the Japanese version of StarCraft turned out to be rather unsuccessful. The quality of the localization was low — the translation contained errors and inconsistencies.
  • It was noted, for example, that some text remained untranslated: when selecting the Japanese language, many in-game messages still appeared in English.
  • This is one of the reasons why the Brood War expansion was imported to Japan by SourceNext and released only in English. For Brood War, only the game manual was translated into Japanese.
  • Back then, the Japanese dubbing and translation existed only for the original game. The original game includes all in-game cinematics fully voiced in Japanese by SourceNext.
